2021 Chenin Blanc
Despite only making two white wines, they have always been a popular part of our overall wine line-up and have often prompted people to ask why we don’t make more and different white wines. Well, as of the 2021 vintage, we are making more. We’re very happy to release both a Chenin Blanc and a Viognier this year. The goal with both wines is to continue our take on crisp, fresh whites that will work as well at the dinner table as they do out on the patio or at the beach. As for the, why Chenin Blanc question… Wendy and I have always loved the dry Chenins from Vouvray and Savennières as well as those done as sweet wines from Quarts de Chaume. They’re lean, crisp, mineral laden style, food friendliness and just plain deliciousness have always made us reach for them on shelves as well as from restaurant wine lists. It’s exactly the type of white wine we want to produce.
For the Chenin Blanc this year, we were thrilled to be able to source from the Jurassic Park vineyard. There isn’t much Chenin planted here locally and especially not much that is 40+ years old like these old vines! As was true for many varietals at many vineyards in 2021, getting things ripe was a challenge. We waited and waited but once we saw some (ever so rare!) rain in the forecast we decided to bite the bullet and pick. The fruit came in beautifully but certainly not as ripe as we’d have liked. We debated making a sparkling wine from the juice but were not prepared to go that route. The wine went through a super clean native yeast fermentation with absolutely no intervention on our part and finished at a very low 11.6% alcohol. We are very pleased with the result and think this will be a delicious wine on release but may be even better five or six years down the road.
