/ 2016 Syrah, Deux

Last year, after putting together our 2016 Second Street Cuvée and our Zotovich Vineyard Syrah, I realized we had a fair amount of Syrah left in barrel. Tasting through blends of Shokrian and Zotovich vineyards, we decided on a 50/50 blend of the two and the resulting wine captures the best of those unique places. Pulled from completely neutral barrels, this wine shows off the rich, jammy fruit profile of Shokrian and the lean, earthy profile of the Zotovitch. Once it was put together and bottled, we had a new dilemma - what do we call it?! We decided to have a “naming contest” and thanks to nearly a hundred great ideas from wine club members, friends and family, we landed on the perfect and perfectly simple French word, “Deux”. Deux resonated with us because there are two vineyards in the blend and there are two of us behind our small, family brand. Special thanks to Jo Swanda for the suggestion!

Tasting Note: Glass coating, inky purple in color. The nose is filled with dark, rich fruit aromas. Blackberry, blueberry and plums along with star anise, earthy tar and tobacco leaf. On the palate, the wine is plush and richly saturated with more dark fruit and a slate like minerality. Despite its heft, the wine finishes with a nice snap of acidity that keeps it fresh and will help it pair with a variety of foods.
