2017 Grenache, Spear Vineyard
Cool climate Grenache through and through. That’s what we’ve got here. We’ve been making Grenache for years from some pretty cool climate sights, but this is the first time we’ve ventured as far west at the Sta. Rita Hills for the varietal. We have been sourcing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Spear but hadn’t really considered the Grenache until we stood on top of the hill it’s planted on and saw the impeccable and thoughtful farming that was being done there. So awesome is it that we’ve included a photo! This was taken after our fruit was picked for the year, but it still gives you a great look at where it comes from. Relatively steep hill, facing due South with the all-important ocean fog receding in the background. We treated this wine in the same way we treat our Pinot Noir… Gently. We use small 1.5 ton fermenters, no new oak, 25% whole clusters and a whopping 35 months in barrel. This is special stuff.
