Our 2014 Sta. Rita Hills is an appellation bottling and one that truly shows off the character of this small but mighty grape growing region. This area tends towards dark, rich Pinot Noir yet the wines are often lively and full of nuance despite they’re relative heft.  This one is no different. From three superbly farmed vineyards, Babcock, Bentrock and Radian this wine exhibits the tell tale Sta. Rita spice quality that runs through the area. Two of the vineyards, Bentrock and Radian, are planted in the far southwestern corner of the appellation on steep, stone filled hillsides. Babcock, on the other hand, is on the Hwy. 246 corridor and is planted to deeper sandier soils and the vines are some of the oldest in the appellation. Fermentation was done with about 30% whole clusters to add both texture and intensity to the wine and then aged for 16 months in all neutral (older) French oak barrels.

Tasting Note: Dark, vibrant ruby/garnet color in the glass. On the nose dark berry fruit is enhanced by black tea and cola spice. There is a sweet wood like quality on the nose as well that is very intriguing considering the wine was aged in older neutral barrels. The mouth feel is a treat here as well. Rich fruit is wrapped in crisp acidity and you feel the impact of both, simultaneously, throughout the palate. The finish is long and kept firm by the stem tannin and acid in the wine.
